We Are Family

Okay, for those of you who were at Connections on the 13th, this is just to get the conversation going. For those of you who weren't, I'll blog about my sermon soon, so keep watching.

What have we gained with our "one family per house, two incomes per house, two cars (at least) per house" lifestyle?

Do you mind having people just drop by unannounced?  If not, why?

How many people really know you?

What if you were sharing a house with another family - what would the problems be with that?

What keeps you from spending more time with people?

What keeps you from really opening up to other people?

I'm having trouble coming up with what we have gained with one family per house, so I'll start answering your other questions and try to come back to this one.

It really does bother me when people come by unannounced because, like you said, they will see the messiness of everyday. I realize that all families have messy days, but maybe my messiness is off the charts, you know?

We have a very small crowd of close family and friends who I feel really know us. When you let your true self be known, it's easier to get hurt by someone (friend or family) than if you keep your distance.

Problems with sharing one house with another family could be differences in lifestyles, morals, child rearing, etc. These differences would increase conflict and anxieties BUT they could also be opportunites to learn that there is no 'right' way of doing things...except when it comes to morals, that is.

Lack of time to get it all done keeps me from spending more time with people. There's just too much to do and too little time to do it in....maybe we just all have our priorities wrong. Time can also be the reason for not really opening up to others....it's a real investment all the way around.

Now all I can think of are things that we have LOST by not having to share single households with multiple families...all we have gained is alot of 'empty' space.
