The Masterpiece Within

"The best artist has that thought alone
Which is contained within the marble shell;
The sculptor's hand can only break the spell
To free the figures slumbering in the stone."
Michelangelo

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
Michelangelo

Sometimes I feel like God is chiseling away my imperfections in order to set free the person He created me to be.  At times I've felt the big chunks fall off and other times it's just sandpapering the rough edges.  Ultimately, everytime I came face to face with my faults and intentionally work at improving those areas of my life that are less than ideal, I have to feel the temporary discomfort of God molding me into His image.

Humbling, but true.  Without His chisel, I'm just a unfinished masterpiece.

How and when have you felt the chisel of the Artist?

I feel the chisel daily....although there are times I want to pick up the pieces he just chiseled away and glue them back into place. Why is it we fear change, even change that we know God is in control of?

I think we just like thinking that we are ultimately in control of our lives. It's only when I give up believing that lie that God can take over and make me into something better than I could ever be on my own. Having a relationship with the Artist means trusting His work over my own. Trust and submission. Hard to do when I'm relying on my own intellect and strength.
