Message Recall

A few people have asked about listening to the message delivered on Sunday, 6/20.  It was the message where I addressed a couple of Verlyn's comments - especially the tension between "saved by grace through faith alone" and all the references in the Gospels to "doing" the will of God.  Unfortunately, we have the video of the message, but there is no audio.  We are looking to see why - but if we can't figure it out, then that message will not be available.  I'm sorry about that.  If we can't find it, I will attempt to deal with the issue again on a blog post.  So, be looking for one or the other!

I'm still looking for your comments, too!  First, I hope you are taking time to read through the Gospels, and second, I hope God is speaking to you as you do it!  Leave your comments, insights, questions or struggles here...

I've been waiting to hear the 6/20/2010 message. Has the problem been fixed? Or, when can we expect your blog on the issues dealt with?

I was reading the Parable of the 10 Minas in Luke 19, and found it very similar to the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25. Yet there are many differences as well.

Jesus told the parable in Luke 19 (P10M) between Jericho and his triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The Matthew 25 parable (PT) was delivered on the Mount of Olives 2 days before Passover (& his crucifixion). Both are about the kingdom, and in both the servants who expand or multiply the resources given are rewarded.

In P10M the servant who brought the king only what he had received was called wicked, and suffered loss - as what he had was taken from him. However, unlike the servant in PT (who was not only called wicked but lazy & worthless, and also suffered loss) this servant was not thrown outside "into the darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth."

I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 and a coming Day when the quality of our works will be tested by fire, and we will be rewarded according to what survives. Verse 15 states, "If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames."

Thus the wicked , lazy & worthless servant can not be the same as the wicked servant in P10M. I believe the key to understanding each of these wicked servants has to be in the differences in these parables: Wealthy master vs King; varying amounts of talents given according to ability vs the same amount of minas given with a command to put them to work. PJ is it correct to see the kingdom in Matthew as encompassing the whole world, while the kingdom in Luke focuses more on the saved? (Yet the unsaved who did not want him to rule over them were killed in his presence.) Salvation is the only thing everyone receives equally, and with it comes the great commission to go make disciples.
