Audio Devotional: Feb 4th, 2008

Well, here we go.  The internet and electronic media provide us with so many more opportunities for discipleship, and we want to begin making use of those opportunities.  These audio devotionals are going to be short (5-10 minutes) devotionals for you to listen to and which will go into greater detail on the subject of the sermon the Sunday before.

Being a Christian is an every day, all day thing.  God promises that He will be found by those who earnestly seek Him.  While we probably do need to take a good look at our hectic schedules through God's eyes, He is with us, where we are.  When we can't make 1 or 2 straight, solid hours to spend focusing on God, we can take advantage of the short breaks that we get here and there, and these audio devotionals are meant to help you take advantage of those breaks.

If, for some reason, you can't listen to these online, then you might try downloading them and burning them onto a CD so that you can listen to them during your commute.  If you would like to pick up a CD that already contains all of the devotionals for the week, they will be available at Connections on the Sunday that begins that week.  You can also contact me via email (chris.branscome@thirstyforjesus.org) or phone and I can have a copy ready for you.

Lastly, we'd like to gauge the amount of interest there is in these devotionals, so during these first couple of inaugural weeks, if you download a devotional, please leave a comment to let us know you did.

Enjoy - we hope that God will speak to you, challenge you, and bless you through these!

 Peace!

-Chris

Quiet. With Small Children. A greater oxymoron I know not. It takes significant effort to find this time to listen for God's Voice. I believe it is worth it, though I have yet to perfect it. Television has never been a great time grabber for my family, though a 10% reduction or so wouldn't hurt.
My commute is mainly filled with voices from talk radio. I am a news junkie and "must" keep up to date with the latest bloviations from the talking empty suits. I do occasionally switch over to KSBJ, but in traffic, that can just become another form of noise. The best time for listening to that music I have found is at bedtime. Lying in my bed with my eyes closed and my ipod cranked, I listen to Jeremy Camp, Barlow Girl, and Casting Crowns. The words I cannot "hear" in my commute suddenly become very real to me. I have been driven to tears by Camp's "Take You Back."
I do pray in my vehicle, usually before a big meeting or stressful encounter. I, like so many, go to God in my time of need. My only other regular prayer is at dinnertime. I have Our Daily Bread sitting on my desk at work. I look through it three times per week maybe. But it is a task to complete, rather than a searching for truth or communion. I am missing the point.

Interesting note: the first thought of the use of the Gutenberg press was distributing the Bible, mainly in languages other than Latin, so the masses could be informed and understand the gospel. The first major use and "success" of the internet? Pornography. A mutli-billion dollar industry. My how times have changed.
Thanks, Chris, for taking back a few pages of the WWW for more pure endeavors.

I believe that what you surround yourself with effects your mind...I only listen to KSBJ now instead of the talk radio dribble and rants that used to raise my blood pressure. I know that has made a huge difference in my life.

Thank you for suggesting that we start listening for God and dedicating feasible amounts of time/silence to Him. With small children and hectic schedules, it does sometimes seem impossible to find two minutes to just listen in silence. However, I'm willing to make a conscious effort to do so.
